CHEMISTRY
Chemistry is intended for those students who are college bound, as well as those who are science majors. Chemistry is the study of matter, and in this course, students will be introduced to the structure, properties, and composition of matter and the changes that matter undergoes. In doing so, students will study the phases of matter, chemical formulas, learn how to write and balance chemical formulas and equations, become familiar with the periodic table, study atomic structure, chemical bonding, and acids and bases. Students must be mature enough to handle potentially dangerous material in lab situations, proficient at note taking, and good deductive reasoners. Written lab reports will be required. A good deal of story-type problem solving is involved throughout the course. Recommended: Calculator (Scientific or Graphing) Pre-requisites: Successful completion of Biology and Conceptual Physics (unless granted permission by teacher.) A strong B average of high school science and math courses is recommended.

Chemistry Lab Rules
- We will have assigned lab groups.
- Each lab group will have materials they are assigned and are kept in a specific drawer. You are not to borrow or take any materials from another group’s drawer. You are not to be opening another group’s drawer.
- Your group is responsible for your materials. You must keep track of them, clean them and take good care of them. Some materials are breakable and we do not have replacements for them.
- You are to wear goggles for every lab. It doesn’t matter if the lab does not have “dangerous” chemicals in it. You will wear goggles. Failure to do so could result in a failing grade for the lab and/or a write up.
- At no time is anything to be thrown in the lab area.
- We are to be cautious and mindful of each other and other groups. Bumping into someone could cause a spill of chemicals or the breakage of equipment.
- If there is a spill of some kind, it is possible we might need to use the chemical wash station. That is for emergencies and NOT for play.
- Lab tables are to be taken care of. No carving or scratching in the lab tables.
- Some labs may require gloves.
- Labs are done at teacher discretion. If we have difficulty following the lab rules, labs can become teacher demonstrations.
- Proper lab reports will be required of every group for most every lab.
- Labs will constitute a large portion of your grade. Pay attention to detail in your labs.
- Labs should be fun!
